Summary of placement

For a while now we have been doing a 2:1 model and have students working over a variety of areas within MSK.

  • Three clinical days a week with 2 students to 1 PPE. Students have staggered patient diary and PPE has diary cancelled out to manage

  • Help run classes such as active back, amputees, knee replacement, shoulder group, hands group

  • 1.5 days in interest areas:

    • Pelvic health to include maternity ward
    • Hand therapy and hydrotherapy
  • Peer support and participation with band 5 training

  • PPEs x 2

    • One has two days a week for students and the other has one day a week. We made this a 6-month rotation to focus on and develop student management

Advice you’d give to others

  • Involve the team in planning

  • Lead the way – I took on students for a year to show how it could be run

  • Audit and expect teething issues and tweaks needed

  • Involve students and get their feedback

  • Invest and support PPEs to enjoy the rotation and to develop

  • Have a dominated student co-ordinator for area – I also collaborate with Christchurch (UHD)
