Tahra

I’m Tahra, a physiotherapist who recently graduated in June 2022. During my undergraduate studies, I had the incredible opportunity to embark on a unique research placement. Developed in response to the challenges of COVID, this innovative model not only enriched my academic experience but also became the defining moment of my journey. It’s what led me to my current endeavour: an exciting PhD research project.

Summary of placement

The research placement was the result a dynamic collaboration between a brilliant physiotherapy professor at Bournemouth University, the research department at Dorchester County Hospital, and a leading orthopaedic hand and wrist consultant. Together, our mission was to explore the existing literature, seeking evidence for the transformative impact of preoperative therapy interventions on hand surgery outcomes. Guided by Dr Carol Clark, and supported by orthopaedic consultant Mr Tim Crook, the placement provided a hugely valuable and unique experience. From working closely with research experts to witnessing the inspiring work of the hand therapy department, guiding patients on their journey to functional recovery. I gained invaluable insights during orthopaedic clinics and witnessed intricate surgeries first hand, including a variety of hand and wrist procedures and total knee and hip replacement. The placement offered a panoramic view of orthopaedic care, culminating in the initiation of a systematic literature review, which was later completed and submitted for publication, and integral to a PhD funding application. The placement undoubtably left an indelible mark, fuelling a passion for research and patient care alike.
