Placement Lead for Diagnostic Imaging at AECC (and Diagnostic Radiographer and Student Lead at the University Hospitals Dorset)

Summary of placement

A ‘hybrid placement’ was created at AECC to accommodate up to six DI Students. The weekly rota consisted of the following:

  • Clinical services (real patients): x-ray, ultrasound and MRI, image reporting

  • Simulation: use of the x-ray room for role play and practice with the x-ray phantom. Use of simulation kit to help the students to gain empathy for the patient – eye disease goggles, kyphosis simulator, old-person simulator, tremor gloves etc. Use of the ward space and talking mannequins alongside the mobile x-ray equipment to allow students to practice manoeuvring – attempt to set up ‘real life’ scenarios

  • Leadership: led by Matt Southam, Clinical Imaging Lead. Allowing the students to gain experience of clinical processes e.g. audits, bookings, referrals, interviews

This model was supported by the radiography team, clinical imaging team, as well as guest lecturers from University Hospitals Dorset and elsewhere.

Benefits

  • A solution to the lack of hospital placement capacity vs increased student recruitment at AECC

  • A ‘safe space’ for students to learn at a slower pace, without the challenges of the chaotic hospital environment

  • Creates an environment where the theory runs directly alongside the practical, really allowing students to put theory into practice

Challenges

  • Very reliant on a minimal number of staff, patients, and equipment – often sessions are cancelled in instances of sickness, DNAs, or equipment failures

  • Sometimes difficult to book teaching spaces as “teaching trumps placement” on campus

Advice you’d give to others

  • Manage expectations – ensure the students are aware of the challenges of an on-campus placement, and encourage them to use their initiative when sessions don’t run as planned

  • Regular communication with students and staff so everybody is kept in the loop

  • Having some bank staff available would help cover sickness etc. so fewer sessions are cancelled

  • Keeping the x-ray rooms free for practical placement sessions, instead of using the space for lectures
