Jess

Student Pharmacy Technician

Pharmacy Technicians play an extremely important role within the service that the NHS provide and the dispensing of medicine. We met with Jess at St Ann’s Hospital to learn more about why she decided to become a student Pharmacy Technician and what she loves about her job.

What is it like training to become a Pharmacy Technician?

It’s been really interesting, and I have enjoyed every placement so far. Pharmacy Technicians can do more than before, and I am lucky enough to get to experience all that thanks to this course.

There is a lot to take in and a lot of evidence-based work, for example collecting information at the pharmacy/chemist. Whilst training I can see that pharmacy is becoming more valuable and changing all the time, it’s an exciting time to be involved.

I almost didn’t do this because of the kids, but I’m so glad I did. I needed to do this for myself. I’ve wanted to be a Pharmacy Technician for years, and this was the perfect opportunity.

What is your placement like?

My current placement is at St Ann’s Hospital and I Love it here! It’s so different from my previous experience. It’s exciting to be in a role that is new to pharmacy and developing and changing with the modern needs of pharmacy.

Everyone here has been so nice, helpful and enthusiastic. It’s a professional, but also very caring environment.

How are you studying?

Our classes are virtual, we log in remotely. We have a study day on a Tuesday, which I do at home as I have children. I was worried it might just be watching presentations but it’s actually really engaging, the tutors are great.

We join in, they give us quizzes and polls – we must pay attention! Our tutors are very understanding, they know people are working and we have other things going on in our lives, so they make sure we are engaged.

It’s not something I’ve done before – I previously studied art so this is a big change for me. I’m learning it all new. They do a handout and talk you through exactly what they want from you.

I have been given loads of resources and PowerPoints. All lessons are recorded to watch back, so you have everything you need – you just need to knuckle down and do the work.

It is hard working all day, then going home and working some more… But it’s worth it!

What advice would you give to someone considering applying to become a student Pharmacy Technician?

Consider what time you have free, it’s manageable but you need to keep on top of things! The work is constant and is outside of work hours. It’s a lot to juggle but it is definitely worth the hard work.

You need to be flexible to changes, able to travel/have transport and someone who enjoys going all over Dorset to different placements. This is a great opportunity for someone who yearns for experience.
