We recently went into partnership with Bournemouth University and, with the merger of Poole Hospital and Royal Bournemouth & Christchurch Hospital NHS Foundation Trusts, became University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust this is a really exciting time to join us!

Our ambitious multi-million pound plans to develop our sites are well underway, including developing RBH as the major acute and emergency hospital in East Dorset, PH as the major planned care hospital, and ambitious plans for Christchurch to support on-going patient treatment.

Joining UHD gives you the opportunity to enjoy all that Dorset has to offer. Bournemouth is a vibrant university town , and Poole has a large natural harbour and is perfect for water sports or relaxing at a quayside restaurant.

With both the New Forest and Isle of Purbeck on our doorstep, over 7 miles of stunning sandy beaches and coastal paths, we are located within an area of amazing beauty providing a great place for you to achieve your rewarding work life balance.

We are looking for passionate and motivated midwives to join our forward-thinking, energetic midwifery team at UHD. Our maternity services across Poole and Bournemouth have now merged creating new opportunities and coupled with plans to relocate to a new purpose built maternity unit, this is a great time to join us and be part of our new team. We are looking to recruit Band 6 midwives across the following areas:

  • Antenatal ward
  • Antenatal day assessment
  • Postnatal ward
  • Labour Ward
  • Community Midwives
  • MLBU

Maternity Services at UHD are located in the community in Poole and Bournemouth and on a self-contained site at the St Mary’s Maternity Hospital, located across the road from the main Poole Hospital site.

The Maternity Hospital is the centre for all high risk care in east Dorset and is fully equipped to meet the needs of women and babies with complications, as well as women with normal pregnancies and births. The Maternity Service provides a comprehensive service, offering women as much choice as possible in their maternity care; around 5,000 babies are delivered by our maternity staff each year, either at home or within the birth centre and labour ward in the hospital. The Maternity Service offers a traditional model of midwifery care with separate teams for the acute and community service with on-going development of continuity models of care.

The Midwifery Led Haven Birth Centre has a total of five birthing rooms, three of these have pools to facilitate water birth and we offer an aromatherapy service. Care on the Birth Centre is managed completely by midwives and incorporates natural birthing techniques. It is fully equipped to support normal birth in a home-from-home environment.

Our two community teams cover Poole and Bournemouth area. We currently have a base at St Marys Hospital for the Poole team and then a Maternity Hub for the Bournemouth team. In addition to our community team we have a dedicated Oasis team which provides additional support to families. We also provide a homebirth service.

The Labour Ward provides care for women with high risk pregnancies. There are two dedicated obstetric theatres, a two bedded high dependency unit, six birth rooms and one birthing room with a pool. We are keen to promote active birth and where continuous electronic foetal monitoring is advised, we regularly use telemetry monitoring, including for women with medium risk pregnancies who would like to birth in water. Aromatherapy is also used and encouraged on the Labour Ward.

We have a dedicated High Dependency team of Midwives who have undergone specialist training. Midwives on the Labour Ward have opportunities to develop their skills as a part of a cohesive multidisciplinary team.

We have a 12 bedded antenatal ward which also caters for induction of labour. Offering inpatient and outpatient induction of labour dependant on the individual woman’s risk factors, we have streamlined our service to include offering women balloon catheter induction.

We have Antenatal Clinics across both Poole and Bournemouth and on the Poole site we have an Antenatal Day Assessment Unit.

We have a 16 bedded Postnatal Ward offering traditional postnatal care to women and their babies. We also have an 8 bedded Transitional Care Ward, which provides additional support to more vulnerable babies and provides an outreach service to the Labour Ward.

The Maternity department is committed to education and development. We invest in an education team which supports learning and practice development across the department. Opportunities currently in place are as follows:

  • Access to a Practice Development Midwife and Clinical Practice Facilitator
  • Live Team Skills Drills

  • E-learning programmes
  • Post registration opportunities to study at degree, Masters and PhD level
  • Potential to progress through the career structure from Midwife Practitioner to Midwife Team Leader, Consultant Midwife and Matron.
