This is an exciting time for our staff, following a recent review of healthcare services in Dorset which will see major changes to the way healthcare is provided in our region. As one of the two acute NHS providers in the east of the county, our services will be closely linked to those provided at the Royal Bournemouth & Christchurch Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. We’re working in close collaboration to deliver excellent emergency and planned care over the two sites, for the people of east Dorset.


This is an exciting time to join the pathology team in Dorset. We are currently making great progress with our vision to create a first class integrated pathology service for Dorset.

The ‘One Dorset Pathology’ service for Poole Hospital, Dorset County Hospital and The Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals will provide clinicians, patients and carers with a consistent and high standard of service across the area and maximise efficiency in the use of resources.

Staff will be able to develop to their full potential and substantial investment has been agreed, offering opportunities for service development and state-of-the-art modernisation.

Applications are invited for the post of Consultant Histopathologist within the One Dorset pathology (ODP) which comprise Poole Hospital, Dorset County Hospital and The Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals. This is a replacement post and the appointee may opt to work on one site or, may work across the three hospitals as part of the wider One Dorset Pathology team.

At Dorset County Hospital, the Diagnostic work includes surgical pathology, non-gynae cytopathology and autopsy and covers all major disciplines except gynae cytopathology, cardiac pathology and neuropathology. There is an opportunity to be involved in providing renal pathology for the regional Renal Unit based in Dorchester.

At Poole, the Histopathology and Cytopathology service covers Poole, Swanage, Wimborne and additionally some of the outlying areas in Dorset. The reporting services including gynaecology cytology, non-gynae cytology, frozen sections and specimen dissection are provided at Poole and the successful applicant will work within an established multi-disciplinary team.

Royal Bournemouth Hospital is a busy accredited department with a high cancer workload. There will be an opportunity to develop an area of special interest and be involved in the training of Specialty Registrars. The Trust is committed to continuing professional development and opportunities for research exist

This appointment is full-time, although candidates wishing to work part-time or shared will be considered. The intended post is based on a 10PA contract however the appointee may be offered one extra PA due to the clinical workload. Any applicant who is unable for personal reasons, to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues

Qualifications required are FRCPath or equivalent, full GMC registration, and inclusion on the Specialist Register of the General Medical Council in Histopathology or within six months of CCT at interview date.
