BCP Council is developing its Peripatetic Social Work team working across its Adult Social Care services to support demand across all teams.  Starting small and with strategic plans to expand over the next few years, we are now inviting applications from confident Social Workers who are skilled in working with adults, ideally in a variety of settings.

For experienced Social Workers, it is desirable, yet not essential, that you have recent experience in undertaking safeguarding enquiries, are a qualified Best Interests Assessor, or are willing to train in these areas if required.

This is a rare opportunity to help shape and develop a new service as it grows to provide operational resilience across our Adult Social Care teams.

Below is some feedback recently received from one of our Peripatetic Social Workers:

“I enjoy being a Peri; although I move around, I already feel like I’m part of BCP Council.  I’m making a lot of new networks which will help me with my on-going career. I’ve been made to feel very welcome and the teams feel grateful that you’re there.

The managers of each team I’ve been placed in have been really supportive, and it’s helped to have assignment meetings with the Peripatetic manager, so that timeframes, outcomes, and expectations are clear.  We can define what the challenges are together, and plan for exactly what’s needed.

I think that using ‘in-house’ workers is good, because you really get to know the systems and the people.  I feel like I’ve ‘bridged the gap’ when teams are in crisis; you come in with ‘fresh legs’ for the team, you’re a consistent new face”.

Social Worker assignments will be within our community or hospital teams, including where these teams are integrated with health partners, and will involve tasks such as assessments, reviews, and if qualified to do so, undertaking safeguarding enquiries, DoLS assessments and Best Interests decision making.  Expectations and tasks to be undertaken will be agreed at the beginning of each assignment.

To keep the service dynamic, we intend assignment durations to be no longer than twelve weeks, but specific projects may be exceptionally longer.  You will be supported through reflective and caseload supervision, provided by the manager of the team you are deployed to at the time, whilst your professional supervision, including supporting your Continuing Professional Development and annual appraisal, will be provided by the manager of the Peripatetic service.

This role will suit qualified and registered professionals with an innovative and flexible approach to practice. We are seeking someone with a highly adaptive mindset, positive attitude and the ability to enjoy and embrace change and challenge. An ability to build good working relationships quickly will be an advantage, as well as effective communication and strong IT skills. The role will involve agile working at different locations across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole, including opportunities for home working.
