Portesham Surgery

Permanent, part time, 3 to 5 sessions per week

Think of your commute to work. Now close your eyes and replace it with the stunning view across the medieval village of Abbotsbury with St Catherine's chapel in the foreground, the Fleet in the background and Portland harbour disappearing into the sea mist beyond. This could be your new commute. Google it (you won't regret it!)

The Practice:

Portesham Surgery is a traditional rural dispensing practice with 3 partners and over 3,000 patients. By traditional, we mean that we are small enough to know generations of our patients, to hear laughter from the reception area, to know which member of staff can drop urgent antibiotics off to a housebound patient on their way home... and yes, our patch really does cover the small villages and rural communities from Langton Herring to Burton Bradstock so we are at the heart of the Jurassic Coast, and our home visits can require knowledge of local milking times!

Our population tends to be older than a typical town practice, but this does mean we at times benefit from very good cakes!

What we offer:

Portesham Surgery is looking for a permanent salaried GP to complement our team and give us additional sessions (3 to 5 per week) so we can continue to give the best possible service to our small but growing list of patients.

We all work part-time so we can cover each other and have a decent work-life balance. There is scope for some flexible working between school hours and additional sessions. Your sessions would include one duty doctor day when you would be triaging the on-the day urgent patients, and dealing with hospital correspondence, lab results and script requests. On your other session(s) you would have a list of around 12 patients to see (or do a telephone or video consultation) in 15 minute consultations. We find this more efficient and less stressful than trying to squeeze everything into 10 minute consultations.

The team:

We have a nursing team of two practice nurses and two HCAs to support you, and we are members of the Mid-Dorset PCN which employs pharmacists, social prescribers and now paramedics (so you might have towrestle them for the home visits).

The small size of our team means you will get to know everyone quickly and we are constantly talking, supporting and learning from each other. We treat everyone as part of the team and your voice will be heard and positively welcomed in meetings and when considering changes.

You should consider that you will normally be on duty with at most two other GPs and sometimes you will be the sole GP, so you need to be confident working on your own.

Closing Date: Friday 13th November 2020 (we are not superstitious!)
