October 10 every year is World Mental Health Day!

People around the world battle with mental health issues daily, sometimes without even knowing it. But until recently, the bigger problem was how lightly the world was taking it. This is now changing, with efforts across many organisations and communities providing support to people struggling with mental health challenges.

World Mental Health Day is a great day for us to renew our consciousness and achieve even more progress, but mental health awareness is not an activity we subscribe to once a year. It is an ongoing commitment to understanding mental health conditions enough to demystify them and recognize them as real health problems.

As health and care professionals who spend most of our time caring for others, it is easy for us to lose sight of our own wellbeing. Today serves as a reminder for us to look inwardly at our own mental wellbeing and stay sensitive to the problems that can come from not looking after it. Let’s rally around each other with support whenever a friend, family, or colleague feels down and in need of someone to talk to. Heaven knows they need it.

How can you help?

  • Be emotionally and mentally aware. Mental health is not a farce, it is just as real as every other health condition.
  • Spread the word, talk to someone about mental health.
  • Stay connected with your friend, family, and colleagues. Check on them every now and again, you never know how far that text, phone call, or visit could go in keeping their energy levels up.
  • When someone approaches you with something that looks like a potential mental health problem, don’t write it off or judge them. Give them a listening ear and help them get help.

How can we help?

  • We have plenty of useful resources on our website that you can use for self-care, and we are constantly updating them to make sure that we cover as many areas of support as possible.
  • If you ever need someone to talk to, feel free to refer yourself to our wellbeing hub, we’re always happy to help. You can also refer a colleague or team member or refer a whole team.
  • We have lots of exciting events that can help you look after your health and wellbeing. Plan to join in and tell someone to tell someone. There is something for everyone!
