Family therapists are usually qualified CAMHS practitioners who undertake further training to specialise in working with families as well as the individual child or young person.

Family therapists work with the whole family where possible, so that everyone becomes part of the solution to the mental health difficulties a child or young person may be facing.

They are trained to draw out everyone’s strengths and resources, so that problems can be seen in a wider context.

Qualifications

Family therapists will usually come from a ‘core profession’ and will have undertaken academic and clinical qualifications as appropriate for that profession. They will also then undertake further specialist training in family therapy.

Experience

Family therapists will have gained experience in working with children and young people, as well as their families, in their professional career.
