Developing you

Reaching your career goals

In Dorset, we want our pharmacy workforce to be supported to reach their career ambitions.

We are committed to providing colleagues with fulfilling and rewarding career pathways, balanced with health and wellbeing.

Career pathways

We can offer our pharmacy colleagues some excellent career pathways with lots of opportunities.

Wherever you are in your pharmacy career, Dorset will support you to find the right route for you, including portfolio careers.

All pharmacy assistants are supported to complete a pharmacy services assistant (level 2) qualification. If you work in a hospital, you have the opportunity of working in dispensary, aseptic services and wards. If you work in a community pharmacy you will work in a dispensary and in the pharmacy selling medicines.

In Dorset, pharmacy assistants are being supported into senior pharmacy assistant roles and to train as pharmacy technicians to develop their careers further.

All trainee pharmacy technicians are supported to complete a two-year accredited pharmacy technician course. This can be in a single healthcare setting or multiple settings depending on the role.

Once qualified, pharmacy technicians are supported through a Foundation programme to continue their development as a registered pharmacy technician.

There is a great deal of variety offered for a pharmacy technician and you can choose to specialise in an area or continue to explore other healthcare settings. Further development might include clinical, management and leadership qualifications.

In Dorset, pharmacy technicians are provided the skills to work at a higher level if they want to pursue senior roles.

Some pharmacy technicians choose to study to become a pharmacist, in Dorset you will be supported to meet the entry criteria for this.

All trainee pharmacists are supported through their Foundation training placement year by a designated and practice supervisors alongside a structured training pathway to become a registered pharmacist. Trainee pharmacists can train in a single healthcare setting or multiple settings.

Once qualified, pharmacists will be supported to undertake the Dorset Foundation Pharmacist Progression Pathway with the opportunity to undertake recognised education pathways and postgraduate education. Your progression will continue onto advanced clinical practice and potentially consultant level practice. Dorset recognises the Royal Pharmaceutical Society credentialing pathways and seek to support pharmacists through these.

As well as specific pathways for each of the pharmacy professions there are opportunities to attend learning sessions and be supported through pharmacy networks.

A portfolio career contains a variety of roles rather than one job at a single organisation, in Dorset we recognise that this is a desirable career pathway for some pharmacy professionals and we support building portfolio careers around an individual.
